#0964 Backup
I have had more time doing PC backup stuff and fixing crap than sketching. I was thinking of the early novels, Richardson, all made up of letters, which became possible because of the speed-up of the postal system. The speedup led to the conception of letters forming a whole. In those epistolatory novels the letters themselves are part of the plot. OK, self reflective stuff. So this is a bit like that. So is the next one.

#0962 Equal to the Challenge
One of the incantations from Eric Maisel’s book, I am equal to the challenge. I had the image of a needle, but finished up with a line. That line is equal to all the black. The next one, like all in this series, is the inverse. Which I arrived at by flipping it over removing the white line and putting in a black line.

I listened to a wonderful talk by Wayne Theibaud (thanks Josh for the link to the podcast.)** He is a joy to listen to, and I would love to be a student. For a moment I was. How to learn to paint? Draw an egg. No eggs in the fridge, I did a lemon.

#0959 Gum Fern Bush
One from the Australian trip in March earlier this year. Under the three Sisters in the Blue Mountains. All the Australian sketches are in a category.
I am attracted to Lee Krasner’s work. I think it is her struggle, and how she is in Pollock’s shadow. True, any drip painting by Pollock shines, but behind that light I see the Krasner shadow. Her statements about art are ok too. I have an earlier sketch of her from a self portrait, this one is from a photo in the Hobbs book.

I am reading the book by Janine Burke, the Heart Garden about Sunday Reed. I have just got past the intro with the details about her upbringing, and now about to learn about a few Australian artists, including one of my favourite, Arthur Boyd.

#0954 Bowl
This morning I thought I’d have a good shot at moleskine style sketchblogging. There is a tradition here I semi-tap into and is close to what I aspired to at the start. Sketches. I got a bit carried away and that is OK. I think I am finding style in this genre that I may be able to perseverw with for a while, especially once the 1000 are done.
The title “I would like to place my mind inside the bowl.” is not sketchbloggy at all, but a quote from the Thai Buddhist artist Montien Boonma who did bowl sketches as a meditation.
