Allen Gallery, Chelsea, New York.

While in New York I made an arrangement to have some of the Thousand Sketches prints for exclusive sale in a Chelsea, Manhattan Gallery!

It began when I stumbled into the gallery not far from where I was staying and saw some prints and originals by Zoe Mac on show. I liked them and I was impressed by the printing process she used, not unlike mine! It turned out it was her opening the next night and I was invited. From there it led to Michel Allen selecting 14 prints that she will handle from New York!

This is a good development for me & this project. It is the first of what I hope will be several galleries that choose to be the exclusive outlet for some of the prints.

I am pleased to make this announcement, I would have done it earlier but I wanted to have the link to the prints in place first.

I was up fairly early and this one has a morning feel to it. Again, I see this one LARGE.

I have not figured out a marketing plan for the prints on canvas editions. Talk to me if you are interested.

I am persisting with my exploration of this abstract style. I love it. And in addition to the prints on paper edition I can make 1.2 meter wide prints on art canvas. With this image and with all these abstracts it is these big prints I have in mind. They capture the energy I have for this work.

I have modified this one a little. See here.

Duchamp

I have a lot of time for Duchamp. I recall the controversy when an exhibition came to Sydney, must have been late 50s? I was a kid. I thought it was stupid. But now I can see it more clearly. Art looking at art. Art asking what is art, art art. And here is a sketch, hardly art, but a little portal into the question what is art.

It was Duchamp who came up with the idea of recapitulation art, he had a go at all the styles before him, I can see how that leads to thinking about what it is all about.

One thing that it *is* about is the process, the idea, the concept. Was he the first who really got that? Maybe the first to make that idea into art.

How does it tie in with Thousand Sketches? Simple, the idea in the form of the blog + digital images (all open source & on the web) plus prints for sale is the idea that comes tied into the wehole thing. The prints have the Thousand Sketches # on them – they are a physical portal to the site. Buy one now! (or just download one but it won’t have my signature on it.

That was another thing that Duchamp bought into focus. Found objects – signed. Signing something makes quite a statement.

Being Digital – Tablet PC – exploring a medium

pen

I realised that it is not immediately obvious that the images I do are created digitally. In fact it was not clearly mentioned in my About page till I added it just a day or so ago.

This is a project with minimal parameters – one is to do 1000 in one year, the other is to do them all digitally, which in essence means using my Tablet PC or Palm Treo.

The time frame creates a frame – not unlike the frame around a painting. It is a space within which to explore & see what arises.

Being digital is similar. There is diversity & choice – there is also a clear line.

It is obvious that I am looking over the fence, Yesterday’s post: colligraphy and today I found myself following up on egg tempera mentioned in Katherine Terrell’s post! There is media envy, and you cans see why – that crappy little pen is all I ever use!

I am reading a about peoples work Рand loving that Рmany are also exploring & blogging their creative development, they are material people. I am also keen to find others who are doing what I do, virtual stuff, Tablet PC + Gicl̩e prints. The medium allows diversity & also has its own constraints. If you know of others or you are one, please let me know.

There must be lots of people using the various painting & drawing software… so I guess I am curious also about those who use it to explore their creative journey.

Which brings me to another post… Creativity.

Trade Me

I have sketches on Trade Me. Still learning about this too! All part of the “archetecture”. A Web Gallery, a blog and now an auction room. Contrary to my expectations I like the more public viewing! The images have not been up long and there has been more interest as the word goes out.

Borders

Borders count! One reason for the A3+ size printer choice was borders. I can now make them bigger! Here is sketch, # 31 Nut positioned on its A3+ sheet. I have a whole new feel for that picture, especially in tones that surpass what I saw on my screen!

Atoms

I love the feel! I love the colours, they are rich and deep and dark.

I am pleased. As I write, I’m making prints that I like! Nothing I’ve done till now has worked as well as a new printer I bought yesterday. An A3+ printer, it can do 13 inches by 19 inches. It uses pigment ink stored in eight cartridges. I am printing on archival paper and these prints will last! Best of all they are beautiful!

The transition from bits to atoms is being made.

People so often talk of going digital. For me it is a delight to go physical on this occasion. I need to change the website again, some prints will be in A4 others in A3+. These prints are nice! It seems to me that some sketches suit the A4 size and others blossom when bigger. I will make the call on this and offer the editions accordingly.
