Christmas Lillies – flowers in a vase – a Kiwi thing
It is a real New Zealand kiwi thing as far as I know to have these big lillies out at Christmas time. I can’t recall having them in Australia, maybe they do now.
The origins of this sketch is a discussion about originality & the way the subject matter may or may not matter. I do a lot of ordinary subjects, why not a vase of flowers.
I thought the flowers would suit a red background. It seems a bit much, but I tried several others & nothing worked as well. This was done in one pencil setting, one width, one angle.

I am trying out software as usual and hit on this image of a hand – I have been wanting to draw hands. And there is Dan’s The-shirt – with those words from the famous New Zealand haka. Ka Mate The words are about possible death in battle.

Weathered Flax Flowers
Dead Flax stalks – last year’s flowers
I began with plain graphite, but clicked colour in error & let it be.
The stalks have been in wind, sun, rain, snow & sleet for about a year, they are dried & bleached and weathered greay in places. They will soon compost themselves.

Manuka comining into Flower
I have been going about three months and have earlier Manuka sketches of the old seed heads, but now the new buds are out and some are in flower.
This is in faux pencil on faux moleskine and it looks best shrunk down in size… the power of digital manipulation!
