#0989 Maurice Bucke
Maurice Bucke was the psychologist who came up with the words cosmic consciousness. Ok, corny now, but it paved the way I think for things to come.
His connection with an equally bearded Walt Whitman is in the movie Beautiful Dreamers but probably not worth watching!
It is easy to go too flowery and too cosmic for our taste. Keep it simple.
#0981 Contemplating One
One thing leads to another. One of the hopes I have as the project comes to a close is that I will have a sense of unity. Yet I shun that too, I want to honour all the inner pulls and to go in all directions. But that war is tiring and brutal at times. One strong direction for me that has emerged and that is promising as a unifier is earth. I do hills and plants and crosses that symbolise the sacred of the here-and-now of earth. That focus has emerged, and I am pleased to notice it, make a new category. During the life of the project I have applied a maxim: Enhance what emerges. So to build on the earth theme I looked at blogs and articles on sacred earth and sketched moments that appealed and found titles inspired by the musings.
These next two are a return as well, to a batch I did early on, at the time of the “Launch” in November 2006.
#0976 Mt Pete
I am at Vic’s café in Christchurch. Pleased to be working on my blog at the end of my sabbatical. I have a few to post up! A few of the ones I am posting, perhaps all of them, are on the theme of Return. I am coming to the end of my project, hence returning to work, to normal, to the familiar. Mt Pete is familiar, we see it from the other side of our house, its moods never the same.
I am playing more deliberately with a return to earlier sketches.
Back Up. The disk failures have not been in vane. I now have a backup system par none. I am enjoying the word too… up. Up. Better than a back down.
If you are interested in my backup strategy, read on.
I am posting on the 8th November – but these were done almost a week ago at Mt. Lyford. Since then the exhibit has gone up and we had a good opening night!
The year of sketching is coming to a close and one thing on my mind in this last leg is to return. Return in many ways, to the earlier sketches, and to normal life!
Here is an earlier Kowhai.
From about a year ago.
I dreamt a woman artist had collaborated with two older men, one did the background the other some frame setting. The woman was to draw in a shark, or was it carp? This was about 20 years ago and she had never completed the project. The men were now dead and famous, the picture would be worth millions, so I encouraged her to add the fish! It is not too late. She did.
I did not know it when I caught the bug in August last year, but projects is something artists do. Paintings do not exist in a vacuum, they belong to a body of work consciously or unconsciously. Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, Monet’s ponds…
