Circles & syncronicity

I just updated a post I did in October Added an picture I said I’d add of a Frank Stella painting.

Finished up simplifying my image while I was there. Of course the original is still there in the original post, but here is the tweaked one:

This image is available printed in a limited edition. It is available exclusively on Felt, a New Zealand Art & Craft website.

I have a few earlier sketches of the harbour. Kate & I have been walking in the Port Hills, familiarising ourselves with the terrain for the the “Over the top Ride” which is now in full-swing at Otahuna Riding.

Once I got into the swing of this pen I want ed to try it out in all sorts of ways. What is more subtle here is the gradation offered in ArtRage. I wanted the distance to recede more so added a gradient of haze. What I like about the “stencil” that does this is that the result is not purely mechanical & mathematical, the gradient is still produced by hand, but with a bit of help! A tool!

The edition of this image is available exclusively Felt, a rather wonderful New Zealand Art & craft site:

Have been working with this one for a while, resurrected it. Thinking about pastel. A while back someone said that my landscape pastels reminded them of Wolf Kahn. I managed to find a book by him the other day, and I love his work. One side in the war aspires to be a Wolf Kahn. I don’t think I’ll quit on that aspiration either.

I did the last two “plein air”, however in the second one I had the first image as one of the layers as a reference for the lines. In an aha moment I combined the two as layers and did some post production. I like the result.

Golden Ending

Harekeke, New Zealand Flax. I feel connected with it and just took a swag of photos on our recent walks. More coming up.

This one like the earlier Circle was one where I found the final image by deleting layers, and also by changing the original colour from a heavy black to this golden colour, which really suits this particular subject, this particular flax that is, the variety of the remnants after seeding is enormous. Some are very black. The exploring was satisfying!

This one is printed to suit a 10 x 8 frame and has collage of (treated) dried flax material.

Harakeke is the Maori name for New Zealand flax. I have a category for it on the right, Flax, click that & you will see a wide variety of ways I have connected with this iconic plant.

This one was flowering but on display outside a shop called Harakeke in the new High street development in Christchurch.

I am pleased with the way my Ink & Wash style is evolving.

“Hi Walter, yes I love it thanks. Going to frame it – do you have any suggestions about that would suit it? We have a modern house with off-white walls. Thanks! Hilary”
