As the American art critic Dave Hickey explained in Ric Burns’s excellent Warhol documentary, “He wanted to be very famous. It was very important to him. To succeed. It was a mode of survival. He was really driven. I don’t think he spent an hour of his life without thinking about how to make it work.”

1. I just read a great book.
2. The topic came up in a forum I am in.
3. I had the digital liquid ink pen in my hand & I could not help it.
4. It just occurred to me it would be fun to try an Elvis tag.
5. I am a fan!
6. Elvis looks like David, the classic artist subject.

How would it look printed on pure pink velvet?

The book of course is Tarzan Presley, by Nigel Cox, a great book with a few legal constrains around it, out of print & selling now for hundreds of $ – I have one & just finished it. The Elvis backstory is just right, he grew up with the apes in New Zealand!

Allowing abstract forms to emerge, to delete some, to let one influence another is one of my “styles” here. So accepting this doodle as a Crossroad of feeling the tension between two things is one step that led to the next few.

After #58 I realised I was feeling in a darker mood. I went for it with this one using the virtual pallet knife. As dark as I went there was a deep inner glow, which mirrored one I felt as well. Very reassuring.

Later: As I add this note 2 months later this one reassures me. I continue to hear from people how this is a favourite.

It is a sketch! It then went through a few software mash-ups and came out like this. Looks good printed as a small image on A3+

Went for a long walk today in the hills. Looked at the colours. A cloudy day. Thinking about landscapes and still focussed on Palm work. Here is the result.

One of my favourite sketches so far. My friend, Brian, founder of the Broadcasting School in Christchurch has been supportive of my efforts here. The break through point was his story about a discussion he had a long time ago about publishing, with the then British PM, Harold Macmillan in his capacity as the head of Macmillan Publishers, where they concluded:

“You win some & you loose some, and the important thing is to win a few more than you loose.”

The sentiment is apt for this project in many ways, thanks Brian.
