I am at Vic’s café in Christchurch. Pleased to be working on my blog at the end of my sabbatical. I have a few to post up! A few of the ones I am posting, perhaps all of them, are on the theme of Return. I am coming to the end of my project, hence returning to work, to normal, to the familiar. Mt Pete is familiar, we see it from the other side of our house, its moods never the same.

After the surrener I was not happy, but this is not my previous café style, I want to just flow on!

There is something brewing here & that is the delight in the the new “art pen” in ArtRage 2.5. I just want to peacefully doodle with a newly discovered pen.

Maybe there is alchemy here because this was just black on white, and it transformed, or because there is something brewing in that beaker… or maybe I just did this one and the next few in the Alchemy café.

I’m Home! Things are coming together.

Night Life (from NY):

Hardly night life I had, other than going to nice places at night for a meal.

I am back after a 24 hour flight.

On the plane I did a lot of reflecting about where to with the sketches. And it is interesting to post this one that I had already done. Read on.

One thing is that I now want to return to the local, that makes sense. I also want to work with the memories and the thousands of photos from San Francisco and New York. I’ll do both. So that is content.

From a process point of view here is the idea I had on the plane: Make the abstracts more figurative and the figurative more abstract. Bring it all together. Integrate.

And a little further than that too, I have drawn a hard line for myself: No real media till the project is done. Now as I come closer to the 1000 I am thinking real media more and more. Here is the move I am plotting: Explore a greater variety of paper. For example use pastel papers for the pastels. Perhaps use the background colours for the digital ones here and then explore printing with that layer removed on the appropriate medium.

Use the larger formats more, perhaps for canvas but also board and for A2 sheets of watercolor board etc.

~

The thought was there a matter of hours ago, and now posting this I see I was already, more unconsciously integrating various styles.

I have put this in the Abstract category and also in Cafes. I have not done that before.

And yes this is in the New York and the New Zealand category. It is process and Sketchblog. Things are coming together.

Preparation – Life Drawing Tuesday Evening – Mission

Another go at life drawing. Good to do. Hard. Learning lots. A lot of sketches… basically I sketch for three hours solid with many poses, it is like entering another world. I’d like to do more, might look for something in New York and in Christchurch, however I feel like such a beginner and different with my tablet there while they all have charcoal.

I began at lunchtime with some preparation, exploring textures. Inked in a few from the last time, but that felt wrong, that led to pencil. Finished up using mostly pencil ecept for the large patches of black, used pastel for that. Everything is done in Artrage II. I am putting them all up in two pages. Exploring textures is the first page. Here is one of the sketches, done in one of my favourite San Francisco cafes “Roasters”.

My day so far

We biked out to the beach through the park, had breakfast. I put up the rest of the sketches from yesterday’s drawing group. Then I did a few fast still life sketches (next post?) Walked through the panhandle then up he hill to Haight, then along past Ashbury till I found this café: Rocking Java I like it. Yelp.

And here is a sketch from the chairs in front of me. One of the eight still lifes I did today.

In Pete’s Café near the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art – the rest of the day the art gallery was the focus. I am now in the Café Museo posting up some sketches I did after being inspired in the museum.

These line sketches are fun, but I like my kinaesthetic big bold abstracts. I sketch them here on this little screen but imagine myself in some rural studio with unlimited real materials. But I am ahead of myself…

Techniques
I am trying to learn to “paint” in Painter, but it is hard! I don’t really like the interface & its complexity. ArtRage has that licked! But the functionality is in Painter if you can find it! After trying paint brushes for a while in this sketch I went back to pastel & ink, that seems to be ok. But I am studying the manual, and have the Painter magazine coming each month. Tutorials. I’ll get there.

And I have added this to the SketchBlog category, I drank that wine! And the reflection is my notebook.
