I am attracted to Lee Krasner’s work. I think it is her struggle, and how she is in Pollock’s shadow. True, any drip painting by Pollock shines, but behind that light I see the Krasner shadow. Her statements about art are ok too. I have an earlier sketch of her from a self portrait, this one is from a photo in the Hobbs book.

A sketch from a photo in the book I am reading: The Art of Richard Diebenkorn. Great book. Reviews on Amazon say a lot, and say good things about this book.

I was struck by the Diebenkorn paintings in San Francisco – at the SFMoMA and at the De Young. I sneaked a picture. I will go on to say more about this artist & the Bay Area Figurative school. His work and a Matisse follow:

I think Edward Hopper had defined American diners. I certainly though of his one while I ate here late one night. I think it was called the Empire Café.

Hardly night life I had, other than going to nice places at night for a meal.

I am back after a 24 hour flight.

On the plane I did a lot of reflecting about where to with the sketches. And it is interesting to post this one that I had already done. Read on.

One thing is that I now want to return to the local, that makes sense. I also want to work with the memories and the thousands of photos from San Francisco and New York. I’ll do both. So that is content.

From a process point of view here is the idea I had on the plane: Make the abstracts more figurative and the figurative more abstract. Bring it all together. Integrate.

And a little further than that too, I have drawn a hard line for myself: No real media till the project is done. Now as I come closer to the 1000 I am thinking real media more and more. Here is the move I am plotting: Explore a greater variety of paper. For example use pastel papers for the pastels. Perhaps use the background colours for the digital ones here and then explore printing with that layer removed on the appropriate medium.

Use the larger formats more, perhaps for canvas but also board and for A2 sheets of watercolor board etc.

~

The thought was there a matter of hours ago, and now posting this I see I was already, more unconsciously integrating various styles.

I have put this in the Abstract category and also in Cafes. I have not done that before.

And yes this is in the New York and the New Zealand category. It is process and Sketchblog. Things are coming together.

Life Drawing Tuesday Evening – Mission

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

Here are the images from a long intense night. Intense. Can I do this and relax more??

That would be a good thing to explore. One thing is that many of these poses are one or 2 minutes long – I feel under pressure, however I am learning to flick through those controls!

Below is one image and link to the rest.

Preparation – Life Drawing Tuesday Evening – Mission

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

Another go at life drawing. Good to do. Hard. Learning lots. A lot of sketches… basically I sketch for three hours solid with many poses, it is like entering another world. I’d like to do more, might look for something in New York and in Christchurch, however I feel like such a beginner and different with my tablet there while they all have charcoal.

I began at lunchtime with some preparation, exploring textures. Inked in a few from the last time, but that felt wrong, that led to pencil. Finished up using mostly pencil ecept for the large patches of black, used pastel for that. Everything is done in Artrage II. I am putting them all up in two pages. Exploring textures is the first page. Here is one of the sketches, done in one of my favourite San Francisco cafes “Roasters”.

Life Drawing Group, Saturday 4 August 2007 San Francisco

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

Now that was a very interesting new thing to do in my life. What a lot of learning. The sketches are mostly looser & rougher than I put up and all from the one class. They are all part of the project. One ot the things about doing these 1000 sketches is that I do want to sketch and this event gave me “permission to do that. I want to sketch lots to explore, loosen up, and discover my hand. Another few of these events will help. I will also give the same 2 min approach per sketch a go NOW for some still lifes.

Below is one, and the link to the rest.

In Pete’s Café near the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art – the rest of the day the art gallery was the focus. I am now in the Café Museo posting up some sketches I did after being inspired in the museum.

These line sketches are fun, but I like my kinaesthetic big bold abstracts. I sketch them here on this little screen but imagine myself in some rural studio with unlimited real materials. But I am ahead of myself…

I have a lot of time for Duchamp. I recall the controversy when an exhibition came to Sydney, must have been late 50s? I was a kid. I thought it was stupid. But now I can see it more clearly. Art looking at art. Art asking what is art, art art. And here is a sketch, hardly art, but a little portal into the question what is art.

It was Duchamp who came up with the idea of recapitulation art, he had a go at all the styles before him, I can see how that leads to thinking about what it is all about.

One thing that it *is* about is the process, the idea, the concept. Was he the first who really got that? Maybe the first to make that idea into art.

How does it tie in with Thousand Sketches? Simple, the idea in the form of the blog + digital images (all open source & on the web) plus prints for sale is the idea that comes tied into the wehole thing. The prints have the Thousand Sketches # on them – they are a physical portal to the site. Buy one now! (or just download one but it won’t have my signature on it.

That was another thing that Duchamp bought into focus. Found objects – signed. Signing something makes quite a statement.

As the American art critic Dave Hickey explained in Ric Burns’s excellent Warhol documentary, “He wanted to be very famous. It was very important to him. To succeed. It was a mode of survival. He was really driven. I don’t think he spent an hour of his life without thinking about how to make it work.”

The interesting thing is that Kurt Vonnegut is also a print producer, I say is, because new work is coming out posthumously through his screen printer collaborator.

Everyone is an artist – Joseph Beuys

Saturday, May 19th, 2007

I am thinking about art a lot. My art & where it is going. Some key words that stick: iconic – see the Buildings category for example. I want more of the iconic stuff. I need the Christchurch Cathederal. And people, I like to do portraits of people I am reading about or watching on video. Hand is another word, and Line. I like to see my hand in the lines, & I like strong lines, I try to return to more painterly stuff but keep adding lines.

Iconis is one of a list of words I have all pointing in the same direction, Kahn might say Monumental, Jung, archetypal, Moreno psychodramatic. In fact Moreno described the Psychodrama method as: “Exploring truth by dramatic means.” Here I explore truth by the means of lines by my hand. I don’t care if that sounds grandiose! I make no claims though for how successful I am, or that I am there.

Here is another I have just done, I have done about six, not sure which one to post:

This one best caught a look in his face that speaks to me.

I like the boldness & the social engagement. He had wacky ideas, everything is creative, everything is art. There is some truth in that, everything arises from a mysterious source. He seems to consciously make himself the work of art, by creating a persona. Now that is something I quite like, but it is not me. No pseudonyms, no new roles. I am tempted sometimes… I wonder if I could create an artist and do the art from that new role. But no, I just am who I am & that is OK. There are a couple of pictures here by Prince Charles though.

He was in the Fluxus movement as was Yoko Ono. I listened to her son Sean on a podcast the other day, and he spoke of how he was inspired by his mother – you don’t need to be an expert to do art, you can just go for it. He made a movie of his separation with his girlfriend, with her in it! I can see the links!

I went to the “Art of the Nation” at Te Papa and I had a good time. Loved the Hoteres, the Woollastons, one or two of the McCahons and Rembrandt’s etchings. God knows why these, they were ones that gripped me. The item on the cover of the booklet is a painting by Pat Hanly.

I was already in the middle of this sketch, as Hanly was in the Hotere video, they were mates it seems. He is one of the big names in New Zealand.
