I am posting on the 8th November – but these were done almost a week ago at Mt. Lyford. Since then the exhibit has gone up and we had a good opening night!
The year of sketching is coming to a close and one thing on my mind in this last leg is to return. Return in many ways, to the earlier sketches, and to normal life!
Here is an earlier Kowhai.
From about a year ago.

This was from a photo taken on the Muir Beach walk last week. A tiny delicate little thing, smaller than it it appears here, with deep colouration. I was told it was the State flower… and Wikipedia agrees:
The California poppy is the California state flower. It was selected as the state flower by the California State Floral Society in December 1890, winning out over the Mariposa lily (genus Calochortus) and the Matilija poppy (Romneya coulteri) by a landslide, but the state legislature did not make the selection official until 1903. Its golden blooms were deemed a fitting symbol for the Golden State. April 6 of each year is designated “California Poppy Day.”

Saturday, May 19th, 2007Harekeke, New Zealand Flax. I feel connected with it and just took a swag of photos on our recent walks. More coming up.
#471 Golden Ending

This one like the earlier Circle was one where I found the final image by deleting layers, and also by changing the original colour from a heavy black to this golden colour, which really suits this particular subject, this particular flax that is, the variety of the remnants after seeding is enormous. Some are very black. The exploring was satisfying!
This one is printed to suit a 10 x 8 frame and has collage of (treated) dried flax material.

Lantana – sketchblogging, inner stirrings, paint & inspiration

I think that is what is is called, it is among these that the body is found in the movie Lantana (Great Movie)
This is the last one from the Sydney trip in this batch, we now move on to horses a week later in New Zealand – that is the trouble with mt journalling here – I can’t just post up as I go, just too busy. So the journal is all out of chronological order.
Never mind. Even if the chronology is messy there is are journeys running through this year of the sketch:
- Lots in New Zealand & Christchurch
- Some trips to Wellington
- Christmas I did a real sketch trip to Aoraki – Mt. Cook, this was a good warmup to more travel sketching
- Then Napier, but just did not manage to sketch much at all – too much NZAP Conference work.
- Australia for a week, late March 2007, beaches, bush, cityscapes, flowers & wildlife – more to catch up on.
~
The sketchblogging is important to me, I like it & will keep going with it post TS.
The recent line & wash suits that – a sort of sketchbook style.
It will stand me in good stead as I go to San Francisco and New York in July, August.
~
I feel something new coming up though. More focus on something within combined with more explorations of paint, digital paint.
What follows are a few samples of the sort of painting by others I am enjoying . Inspiration – other people’s work follows:

Hibiscus – and a note on Journaling

It is almost a week since we were in Narrabeen on the coast just above Sydney when I began this sketch & the next few. Which is a pity as I feel like Journaling the trip, but it is too late, I am back in New Zealand and back at work.
I have wondered what will become of my interest in sketching & art once the 1000 are done. Well here is one thing that is almost certain, I will start a Sketchblog, a sketch journal. It has begun here in a way, but it will have a different life outside of this project.

Harakeke

Harakeke is the Maori name for New Zealand flax. I have a category for it on the right, Flax, click that & you will see a wide variety of ways I have connected with this iconic plant.
This one was flowering but on display outside a shop called Harakeke in the new High street development in Christchurch.
I am pleased with the way my Ink & Wash style is evolving.

Still using that Dogwaffle pen, I like the way I can make it random. Added the “moleskine” paper in ArtRage.
This is the same little bunch I had in the earlier Still life, something freeing about a 2 min sketch.

This is Celmesia Lyallii, I think I have that right from my days as an assistant to Hugh Wilson when he was surveying the plants of the Mt Cook region in the late ’60s, early ’70s.

This is not really a Lily, but a buttercup. Ranunculus Lyallii
it is iconic in New Zealand and iwas the emblem for Mt Cook Airlines and buses until Air New Zealand took them over. I want to find one of those old logos, can’t find it on the web.
I was pleased to find these on my walk up to the Ball Shelter.

Known also as tea-tree and the New Zealand Christmas tree as it always flowers around this time of the year, our place at Mt. Lyford is surrounded by trees with slightly pinkish white flowers.
It is these very flowers that put the small pink emblem into #246 below.
I prefer the previous sketch. Simple.

Christmas Lillies 2

Same vase of flowers but re-done, finer, more time spent, who knows?
One thing that has happened using the “soft pastel” settings is that I feel confident I can repeat fairly easily what I am doing here. Every vase of flowers I see becomes a sketch in my head.he
On this occasion the flowers were not arranged symmetrically so the vase is not in the middle – disturbs me.
Now I am interested in the jug as well as the flowers. Something to follow through here.

Christmas Lillies – flowers in a vase – a Kiwi thing
Monday, December 11th, 2006#198 Lillies
It is a real New Zealand kiwi thing as far as I know to have these big lillies out at Christmas time. I can’t recall having them in Australia, maybe they do now.
The origins of this sketch is a discussion about originality & the way the subject matter may or may not matter. I do a lot of ordinary subjects, why not a vase of flowers.
I thought the flowers would suit a red background. It seems a bit much, but I tried several others & nothing worked as well. This was done in one pencil setting, one width, one angle.
